Dear Graduating Students,
Graduation applications are officially open, and it is time to select our student Commencement speaker and singer! Any 3L or LL.M. student graduating in May 2021 and attending Commencement in person is eligible to apply.
Every spring, the Graduation Speaker Selection Committee calls for graduation speech applications, hosts auditions, and ultimately holds a vote amongst the members to select the student Commencement speaker. The Committee is overseen by the SBA President and comprised of 3L SBA members (who are not themselves in the running), as well as a faculty member and an administration member appointed by the Committee.
This year, the Committee is also seeking a gifted law student singer to perform the national anthem and the Miami Alma Mater at Commencement.
To become a candidate for Commencement speaker, you must write a proposed graduation speech in full and submit it to sbapresident@students.law.miami.edu by Monday, March 21st at 12:00 PM. The speech should be 5 to 7 minutes in length.
For those interested in becoming our Commencement singer, you must indicate your interest by the same date and time by writing the same e-mail address so stating, along with a recording of your singing.
Auditions for both positions will be held during the week of March 28th, most likely in-person on campus. The Committee will announce the Commencement speaker and singer no later than Monday, April 4th.
Participating in the Commencement ceremony is a highly prestigious honor. The Committee and I hope that you will take some time to reflect on your Miami Law experience and apply to represent your classmates at graduation.
