The Student Bar Association is here for YOU! Even over the summer we are hard at work preparing for the fall semester. Here are some highlights from our work over Summer 2017.
Vice President Frank Florio
“This summer, I oversaw the various committees of the SBA. The SBACommittees are extremely important to the Senate. Each new idea or concern from the student body can be sent to an SBA Committee to work on. The Committee members can then take the idea or concern and craft a strategy to address it. Additionally, SBA Committees are used to construct bills, oversee redrafting of the Constitution and Bylaws ofthe Senate, and create new initiatives.
As your Vice President I encourage all of your to reach out to your SBArepresentatives this year whenever you have an idea or concern at thelaw school. We have exceptional senators that work very hard to makethe law school a better place and a great President leading the way.
Lastly, feel free to contact me at any time regarding anything at all. I look forward to serving the SBA, all of you, and UM Law School this year. Good luck with the upcoming semester. I wish all of you the best.”
Secretary Jenna Florio
“Over the summer I have been working with student leaders in order to help plan their future events for the year. We are working to have thebest quality events for this upcoming year. I have been planning the student organization fair. Looking forward to seeing everyone back at school.”
Historian Sara Ptachik
“This summer I’m focusing on increasing awareness and participation across our social media platforms. Developing a constant and cohesive internet presence is important for advancing the SBA’s mission. An online community not only aids communication between the SBA, students, faculty and staff but also helps foster community.”
2L Senator Ricardo Pita
“I’ve devoted this summer to getting the SBA back in fighting shape. One of my main duties at the helm of the Rules Committee is to ensure periodic and thorough revisions of our founding documents and procedures, which at the moment stand horribly outdated and ignored. With the support of the Executive branch and fellow Senators, we have identified several areas that, if addressed, could drastically improve theSBA’s responsiveness to student needs and initiatives.”
2L Senator Dave Pringle
“Over the summer I’ve been working on creating new ways to foster thepublic interest and pro-bono ethic at Miami Law. I’m looking forward to launching some new initiatives including but not limited to free legal advice clinics where students can sit 2nd chair to experienced practicing attorneys in a variety of fields, a seminar on public interest loan forgiveness programs, and many more career development and service opportunities like additional skills building workshops and talks on public interest fellowships post-graduation. I can’t wait to get some of these ideas up and running and I would appreciate any thoughts from you all so feel free to reach out to me with any ideas.
Looking forward to a great year at Miami Law. See you on the bricks.”
2L Senator Jessica Shevlin
“Over the summer, I have been working on planning the 1L New Student Social at the Ratskellar scheduled for August 11th. Additionally, I have been setting potential dates for the infamous Socials at the Rat forthe fall semester. I am looking into plans for more social opportunities and planning events throughout the fall semester. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or suggestions through Facebook or email! (my email is jshevlin@miami.edu) I’m looking forward to an amazing year and hope to see you all on the bricks!”
2L Senator Joseph Cottingham
“This summer your SBA has worked diligently to prepare for a productive and entertaining school year. I’ve devoted this summer to working with the SBA to realize themost efficient uses of the student budget. As the Chairman of theBudget & Finance Committee I want to see that the students are receiving the most benefit from the expenditures of the student fundswith each and every event the SBA puts on.
