The Miami Law community mourns the loss of 2L student, Jordan Mermell, who passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 2nd.
Per an email from Dean Tony Varona, Jordan had a large community of friends and relatives who loved and admired him. He was an excellent student (a Dean’s Merit Scholar) who participated enthusiastically in class. Upon learning this sad news, his professors used words to describe Jordan that have included “one of my best students,” an “outstanding student” who was “very invested and eager to learn” and “always present, engaged, and thoughtful.” He was “always prepared” and “insightful.” He had “a wonderful sense of humor.” He was “congenial” and “simply a great kid.” One professor noted that Jordan “urg[ed] his classmates to think about how we can make realistic changes to our world that consider science, economics, and environmental justice” and that her “classroom will be less vibrant without him there.”
The Miami Herald included an obituary with the following information:
With deepest sorrow, our beloved Jordan Mermell passed away on April 2, 2021. Jordan was born on February 5, 1990 in Miami, the son of loving parents Diana and Cliff. Nothing was more important to Jordan than his family. He had an extraordinary, never-ending unbreakable bond of love with his parents and brothers. A fun loving, fearless surfer and skier, yogi, creative photographer and artist with impeccable style, Jordan was a popular South Beach resident. He was currently enrolled in the University of Miami School of Law and had previously attended Gulliver Prep, University of Florida, and Naropa University. Jordan was deeply religious, and brought love, joy, and kindness to all who were around him. Jordan is survived by his parents, his brother Mason & partner Daniella Jaramillo, his brother Dillon & wife Stephanie, maternal grandmother Joan Needell, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless other loving friends and family members who will dearly miss him.
